Overtime Sees Saints Down StarOvertime Sees Saints Down Star

02 November 2008

Star come into this fixture on the back of their first MSL win over Neptune of Cork while DCU Saints had a 50% return from their double header Bank Holiday weekend games in the recent past.

Eoin Darling makes it into the starting “5”along with Dave and Emmet Donnelly supported by Martins Provizors (Latvia) and team Captain BIG Mike Trimmer. The sides trade baskets during the opening Qtr but DCU Saints lead at the whistle up by 25pts  – 22pts .

Dion Sherrell (Star) has by now settled into the tempo of this game and is responsible for most of the offensive play by the visitors, aided by Smye and Foley. Emmet D. is subbed in for brother James but is involved in a nasty clash of heads and receives immediate medical attention on the sideline .The Saints battle on none the less and trail at the Half by a single point. Top scorer for the game is DCU’s Mike Trimmer on 13pts. Sherrell for Star now on 11pts.   H.Time …  DCU Saints 36 –37 Belfast Star.

Half Time pep talk now over by the respective coaches for both squads as they face each other once more. Dion Sherrell obviously was listening attentively in the dressing room, because he managed to add a further 14pts to his previous half time total. Martins now benched with a serious ankle injury giving Kevin Lacey (Swords B’ball club) his opportunity to impress Head Coach Vinny O’Keeffe. No sooner than setting foot on court, Kevin gets the steal and nails a trademark slam-dunk to announce his arrival, much to the delight of the cheering home crowd. DCU Saints trailing by 7pts but not entirely out of touch with the play.   DCU 50pts – 57pts Star.

Captain Mike Trimmer (5 blocks) rallies his squad with a quality display on the home sides boards linking up with Kevin Lacey under the Star basket to overturn the 7pts deficit and pressurise the visitors. DCU Saints trailing by 2pts with 52 seconds on the game clock Summersgill takes the game to the Saints but it too little too late as DCU Saints hit their purple patch and level the game. Sherrell not scoring this Qtr Dave, Emmet and Mike Chubb all were playing their part in this remarkable turn of fortune. Emmet Donnelly scoring the equalizing basket on the buzzer to force this fixture into overtime, 67—67 at F.T.

Star having already lost an O.T. game at UCD recently, needed all hands on deck for the tense 5minutes to come. The combination of inter action plays between Mike Trimmer and Kevin Lacey proved unstoppable !!  DCU Saints pulling the “rabbit out of the hat”  powered their way through Star’s defence with a 13pts – zero overtime score. Trimmer and Lacey scoring the 13points between them for the DCU Saints The visitors left wondering what happened as the final whistle blew on an excellent game of basketball in DCU Sports Arena.
