Saints Suffer Loss to UCDSaints Suffer Loss to UCD

24 November 2008

Coach Vinny O Keeffe nearly had to suit up himself and turn back the years to fill the team quota for the MSL fixture. Captain Mike Trimmer was in the USA; Martins Provisors had work commitments, Mike Lacey John Shevlin and Joey McGuirk on the injured list.

This was never going to be a walk in the park for the home side as they faced a team in form and out to improve their own standings in the Nivea for Men SuperLeague. Dave Ryan (UCD) opened the scoring with a 3pointer for the visitors followed quickly by James Donnelly (one of 3 brothers for DCU) . The Saints would have to wait until a further 5 minutes of play passed to register their next score. UCD Marian did not suffer the same lapse in scoring. UCD in charge early on in this fixture      UCD 23pts -----DCU Saints 12 points at Qtr end.

DCU Saints regain some composure as Mike Chubb knocks down a couple of outside scores , Emmet also adds to his tally but the return falls well short considering the exertion by DCU Saints in this Qtr  … The visitors although outscored this Qtr having a better return on their outside plays and inside “put backs” mainly from Ryan, and Parker now on 10pts but not top scoring for UCD , that honour went to Conor Meany on 11pts . DCU Saints 28 – 36 UCD Marian.

Outside shooting has always been a feature from the UCD Marian squad and they chose the third Qtr to add a further 4 three pointers. (8 so far in total) The Saints losing the composure and accuracy required to stay within touching distance of a team now on form at this level. The absence of the two BIG inside from the home sides line up beginning to tell as offensive rebounding by UCD is now a problem for the DCU guards and Coach alike. The Saints on the ropes while UCD now in cruise control and rotating their bench players. DCU Saints were within 4pts of UCD at the start of this Qtr but now 20pts adrift at Qtr’s end. DCU 42 – 62 UCD.

Kevin Lacey having his best Qtr for the Saints, adding 11pts, but Conor James’s  (UCD) outside shooting putting the finishing touches to quell a Trojan effort from the home side. Missed free throws and turn-overs playing its part in the Saints down fall. Eleven 3pointer’s and 100% from the free throw line from UCD didn’t help the DCU Saints cause either ! Luke Mc Crone (UCD) a slow starter but games top scorer on 19pts total  (5 X 3’s). Final score DCU Saints 63 – 88 UCD Marian.

Next HOME fixture this Thursday @ 8pm v Hoops.
